I didn’t think I was going to do another superhero post, but here we are. And peace is the superpower I want to talk about. Peace may not seem like that big of a superpower, but I believe it is. I have often admired people or fictional characters that stayed calm and didn’t overreact or get defensive when things came their way. They always seem to make fewer rash decisions. Well, God is peace & never makes a rash decision, which is one of the many reasons He is my superhero.
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27 NKJV
Peace is a subject I seem to be noticing in so many places recently. It seems to be appearing everywhere. In devotions, on calendars, etc. I’m not talking about world peace, although that would be wonderful, but I am talking about the peace of God on the inside. Where God brings inner peace regardless of the chaotic situations going on around me.
One devotion I read recently was specifically talking about God being Jehovah-Shalom, which means “The Lord is Peace.” Thinking of God as Jehovah-Shalom has really spoken to me as I work with Him to overcome anxiety.
The first appearance of this name of God is found in the below Scripture passage, after the Lord sends Gideon to save the people, which is a little anxiety provoking to say the least.
Then the Lord said to him, “Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die.” So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it The-Lord-Is-Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. Judges 6:23-24
I have been anxious most of my life and learning to deal with life differently is hard, but I know that God is with me & He isn’t going anywhere. I know there is a lot of work to be done on my inner dialog to completely overcome anxiety, but God is doing a great work in me & He finishes what He starts. Reading His Word, meditating on it, and journaling about it has really helped me through. God has brought me so much peace through His truth and His presence in my life. He is my peace. My Jehovah-Shalom.
