The next writing prompt in “God Is My Happy Place” is
“It’s easy to look at ourselves and see ourselves as what we are now. God looks at us and sees what we can become.”
I think the best illustration of this is when Jesus called His disciples/apostles. When He saw at them, He saw what they could become.
Matthew, my favorite, was a tax collector. I have recently watched the first season of “The Chosen” on Pureflix. The way it depicts Matthew and Jesus calling him is so real. It is my favorite scene in the show. In the Bible, it is only one verse of Scripture showing this event, but they did an amazing job at portraying Matthew.
As a tax collector, who was also Jewish, he was hated and despised for choosing that profession, probably even by his own parents. He wasn’t allowed at Jewish gatherings or dinners. No one wanted to be seen with a tax collector. When Jesus was walking by Matthew’s booth, He called Matthew. Matthew dropped everything and went.
‘As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew (Levi) sitting in the tax collector’s booth; and He said to him, “Follow Me [as My disciple, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk].” And Matthew got up and followed Him. ‘ Matthew 9:9 https://my.bible.com/bible/1588/MAT.9.9 AMP
Now what makes this so amazing to me is that Jesus SAW Matthew. He didn’t hate him or despise him. He saw Matthew for what He would become and the man he was created to be. And Matthew, who had probably never really been SEEN, dropped everything for the one who SAW him and loved him.
One of the names for God is El Roi “the God who sees me”
‘Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are God Who Sees”; for she said, “Have I not even here [in the wilderness] remained alive after seeing Him [who sees me with understanding and compassion]?” Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi (Well of the Living One Who Sees Me); it is between Kadesh and Bered. ‘ Genesis 16:13-14 https://my.bible.com/bible/1588/GEN.16.13-14 AMP
This is the name given to God by Hagar in the desert after Abram & Sarai kicked her out. And God found her and her son and spoke to her about her future, when she thought they would die. You can read more on this story in Genesis chapter 16.
I know that God has SEEN me. He knows me. He loves me despite my past and flaws. He sees my pain and understands. He knows all that I have been through and all that I have done. He still loves me. Jesus died for me, knowing I would be imperfect. I know He has a plan for me and that He sees past all of the mess to what I will become. The world may only see my flaws or my past. But God sees my future and what I can become. Amazing.
Here is the video clip of the scene with Matthew. (I own no rights to the video) I highly recommend this show.
