A Letter To The Abused

To those who have been abused, thrown away, sold, or otherwise mistreated:

What you have been through is horrific.

However, I want you to know that you are deeply loved by God. You are important. You matter. You are not a waste of space. You are not alone. You are worth so much more than anyone thinks you are.

Turn to the Lord and He will restore what was lost. There is so much to look forward to. He wants a relationship with you. It is not a twisted relationship. He loves you perfectly. He wants to heal you. He wants to show you the way to a better life. He has loved you since before you were born and He will never give up on you.

God created you in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13-14). You may have been a surprise to your earthly parents, but you were not a surprise to Him. Your parents may not even know you right now, but God knows everything about you and loves you beyond your imaginations (Psalm 139:15-16; John 3:16). He has a plan for your life for good, not for evil (Jeremiah 29:11). He will not take advantage of you. He gives you the option to choose Him, because it isn’t real love, if you don’t choose to love. He does not force Himself on anyone.

I was once like you. I once was abused and tossed aside by people who should have taken care of me. I once held myself in low esteem. I felt like a waste of space and unworthy of love or happiness. When I learned what God has to say about me, everything changed. I became new in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). There are times when I feel the old feelings coming back, but I am learning to go to God and think about the things that He says about me (Romans 12:2). I’m not perfect at doing this, but I improve with time and God is patient with me, which I am so grateful for. He is not abusive. He is loving and kind. He’s not watching for us to make a mistake. He knew we would and sent His Son to die for our sins (Romans 5:8). All I had to do was believe in my heart and confess with my mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord & I received His grace and I am His forever (Romans 10:9). Nothing can separate me from His love (Romans 8:38-39). I am His and He is mine forever. The same can be true for you.

You may have seen people professing to be Christians behaving badly. They may have even hurt you. I’m sorry that you had to experience that. That is not how Jesus is. He loves perfectly. As long as we are on this earth, we are all imperfect and make mistakes and we live in a fallen imperfect world. There is no perfect person. When we accept Jesus as Lord, we are made perfect in the eyes of God, but we still have to grow as Christians. Just like a child has to grow up and learn to become an adult eventually. So it is with our faith. We start out as babies and grow from there. But God will never leave you (Deuteronomy 31:8). He is patient and will lead you along the way (Psalm 23). He is a perfect Father. There will be hard times, but He is always there.

I have included the song “The God Who Stays” by Matthew West. It is such a powerful song. I hope it speaks to you.

God Loves You & so do I.
